Without Walls Blueprint Programme Artists 2020
We are pleased to officially announce that our project Out of the Deep Blue has been selected for the Without Walls Blueprint Programme 2020 along with 9 other UK-based artists and companies. Johnny and everyone at Autin Dance Theatre are thrilled that the research and development for Out of the Deep Blue is supported by Blueprint: Without Walls R&D Investment Fund and we can not wait to continue developing this ambitious and important piece of work over the next few months. The Creative Team is working towards public presentations and live performances for 2021 at international festivals and outdoor arts events across the country!
Out of the Deep Blue is a large-scale performance, featuring 1 female contemporary dancer and a 4-metre tall sea giant puppet operated by 5 puppeteers. This outdoor spectacle is designed specifically for family and festival audiences and is inspired by the themes of the climate emergency and the biodiversity crisis.
The performance tells the magical story of Eko the sea giant who rises from the deep ocean and encounters, on the shore, a little girl called Violet. The choreography is a larger-than-life ‘pas de deux’ using dance theatre and movement as storytelling tools and is set to a mesmerising musical soundscape. Out of the Deep Blue exists as a two-part performance; one 20-minute long promenade of the giant puppet interacting with its environment and the audience and one 25-minute dance theatre duet located at a set performance space.
Without Walls is a consortium of festivals and organisations dedicated to raising the profile of the UK outdoor arts sector, promoting artistic excellence and supporting innovative new work for the benefit of artists and audiences. Since 2007, Without Walls has commissioned and supported the development of over 140 shows, many of which have toured beyond our network of festivals to 22 countries worldwide. Without Walls is supported by Arts Council England as a National Portfolio Organisation.
